FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES:

VOCABULARY

• carrot
• tap root
• vegetable

MATH

• Seriation
• Gather various size carrots (or cut your own from orange construction paper)
• Have your child put these in order from shortest to longest and vice versa

SCIENCE

• Cut the top from a carrot and have your child place it in a shallow bowl
• The water line should be below the very top of the carrot
• Children can predict what will happen
• Keep near a sunny window
• Keep it moist and leaves should start to grow

• Using toy or cardboard pictures of root vergetables and tubers:
• Bury each leaving leafy tops above the ground (soil or sandbox)
• Have your child pick the vegetables from the ground and identify each one

• Positional Words
• Under/Below the ground
• Over/Above the ground
• Leaves grow above the ground
• Roots grow below the ground
• Have your child place objects above or below a given object

• Sequencing
• Create (by drawing) or find pictures from a book or magazine of individual pictures depicting:

• The child watering the seed
• Leaves beginning to sprout

• Pulling grown carrots from the ground
• Mix up the images and then have your child place them in the proper order to tell the "picture" story

• Mix red and yellow (food coloring, paint, etc.) to make orange

• Cut the top of a carrot and use it to stamp paper with orange paint
• You can cut the carrot into various shapes (circle, triangle, square, etc.) to stamp with
