VOCABULARY

There are many opportunities during cooking to introduce vocabulary. Here are a list of words to review specific to this recipe:
  • seed
  • rind
  • stem
  • flesh
  • melon

MATH

  • Fruit Symmetry
  • Find pictures of fruit in a magazine
  • Cut the pictures of the various fruits in half
  • Lay out pictures of the ˝ cut fruit
  • Let the children identify the fruit by its half
  • Children must match the other half to create the complete picture

  • Weighing Fruit
  • Children predict and experiment which is heavier:
  • 5 grapes or 1 kiwi?
  • How many apples will equal 1 cantaloupe, etc.

  • Favorite Fruit Graphing
  • Poll and graph the children’s favorite fruit
  • Compare more, less or equal

  • Fruit Sorting
  • Have the children sort fruit by:
  • Shape
  • Color
  • Seeds on inside vs outside
  • Texture
  • Size, etc.

SCIENCE

  • Compare seeds and pits
  • Some are edible and some are not:
  • EDIBLE: strawberry, banana
  • INEDIBLE: mango

LANGUAGE ARTS

  • Mixed-Up Fruit Stories
  • Children combine two halves of different fruit to create their own new fruit
  • Let them:
  • Name it
  • Describe where it grows
  • What its flavor is, etc.

  • Fruit Phonic Bingo
  • Provide children with a board of fruit pictures (3 rows of 3)
  • Create letter cards for the beginning sound of the fruit on the card
  • Example:If the board contains pictures of a banana, pear, grape, blueberry, apple, etc.; your letter cards will begin with B, P, G, B, A, etc.
  • As you call out the letter children place a marker (they can use a small fruit or clean fruit pit)
  • Three in a row is bingo
  • Variations:
  • Top row bingo
  • Bottom row bingo
  • Diagonal bingo
  • Full card bingo

  • Cold soup is the opposite of hot soup
  • Give children a word and let them state the opposite of that word

  • Have the child state the difference between fruit and non-fruit items by identifying which doesn't belong.
  • "apple", "pear", "truck", "grape", "carrot"
  • Which items are not fruit?
  • Which items are fruit?

SOCIAL STUDIES

  • Discuss the areas where each fruit used in this recipe is grown

ART

  • Fruit Bowl Collage
  • Cut out fruit pictures from magazines (or cut from colored construction paper)
  • Collage paper fruit into a styrofoam bowl

  • Fruity Scented Art
  • Children can paint fruit shaped paper with appropriate scented watercolor paint
  • Add Kool-Aid to some water and have the children water color with scented paint
  • Variation: Provide them with a bowl of fruit and let them paint a scented still
