FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES:


VOCABULARY

There are many opportunities during cooking to introduce vocabulary. Here are a list of words to review specific to this recipe:
  • wok
  • chopsticks
  • rice
  • fried

MATH

  • Have your child predict how many grains of rice are in a teaspoon, tablespoon, cup, etc.
  • You can actually count the number of grains on the teaspoon and children can use this as a reference as to whether there is more or less in the larger items

  • Peas In A Pod
  • Provide pea pods to your child
  • Have your child predict how many peas are in the pod
  • Have your child count how many peas are in the pod
  • Add other peas and count totals

SCIENCE

  • Observe different types of rice:
  • Brown rice
  • Whole grain rice
  • Cooked rice
  • Puffed rice
  • Aromatic rice

LANGUAGE ARTS

  • Rice Bottle
  • Fill an empty soda bottle with rice
  • Add letters, beads and small objects
  • Seal the bottle
  • Children turn the bottle and shake it to find the letters and objects
  • You can add a checklist for your child:
  • A - Apple
  • B - Bear

  • After reading "Do Mice Eat Rice", play a rhyming game:
    "Do cats eat ______"
    "Do dogs eat ______"
    "Do goats eat _____"
    "Do foxes eat _____"
  • Use picture cues for younger children
  • Supply the answer in picture form and let them match

  • Letter Recognition
  • On a piece of construction paper, have children glue rice over their name or individual letters

SOCIAL STUDIES

  • People eat rice all over the world
  • Ask your child what kind of rice you eat at home

  • Fried rice is a staple in Chinese American cuisine
  • Discuss its origin
  • Show China on a map
  • Show pictures from Chinese culture and discuss
  • In February discuss Chinese New Year and its animals

ART

  • Rice Mosaic
  • PARENTS SHOULD PREPARE THE SEEDS BEFORE THIS ACTIVITY - DO NOT LET YOUR CHILD NEAR THE RUBBING ALCOHOL
  • In a disposable bowl, soak rice in a solution of Rubbing Alcohol and food coloring (1:1 ratio - alcohol/food coloring)
  • Dry on paper towels
  • Let your child create a mosaic using the rice

  • Rice Shakers
  • Have your child fill with rice:
  • Plastic bottles
  • Paper plates, taped together
  • Plastic cups, taped together
  • Decorate
  • Play their musical instrument by shaking it

FINE MOTOR SKILLS

  • Practice using chopsticks by picking up pom poms

RICE PLAY

  • Fill a tub with rice
  • Have the children measure, pour and scoop rice
  • Your child can play buried treasure
  • Hide various objects or pictures in the rice for children to identify and sort
