FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES:


VOCABULARY

There are many opportunities during cooking to introduce vocabulary. Here are a list of words to review specific to this recipe:
  • apple
  • grape
  • banana

MATH

  • Fruit Symmetry
  • Find pictures of fruit in a magazine
  • Cut the pictures of the various fruits in half
  • Lay out pictures of the ˝ cut fruit
  • Let the children identify the fruit by its half
  • Children must match the other half to create the complete picture

  • Weighing Fruit
  • Children predict and experiment which is heavier:
  • 5 grapes or 1 kiwi?
  • How many apples will equal 1 cantaloupe, etc.

  • Favorite Fruit Graphing
  • Poll and graph the children’s favorite fruit
  • Compare more, less or equal

  • Fruit Sorting
  • Have the children sort fruit by:
  • Shape
  • Color
  • Seeds on inside vs outside
  • Texture
  • Size, etc.

SCIENCE

  • Fruit Observation
  • Before cutting fruit have children predict what is inside

  • Observe oxidation with cut apples
  • When exposed to air apples will brown
  • Squeeze lemon on a second piece and discuss the difference
  • Lemon is an antioxidant

  • Banana Over Time
  • Observe a banana over a 2 week period
  • Start with a green banana and end with a brown one
  • Document with words, drawings or photographs

  • Dry out then plant seeds

  • Create blueberry dye
  • Boil blueberries in 1/2 cup of water
  • Strain the skin and seeds (if any)
  • Paint (see ART below)

LANGUAGE ARTS

  • Have the children mix and match the halves creating their own fruit
  • Glue it down to paper and create a name and a description of this new fruit
  • Discuss its origin

  • Phonic Fruit
  • Go through the alphabet and brainstorm the names of fruit for each letter sound

  • You can sing this song with your child before eating your fruit salad:

    (Repeat each verse substituting long vowel sounds)

ART

  • Paint with the blueberry dye
BLUEBERRY DYE CAN STAIN - USE CAUTION!

  • Cantaloupe Seed Mosaic
  • PARENTS SHOULD PREPARE THE SEEDS BEFORE THIS ACTIVITY - DO NOT LET YOUR CHILD NEAR THE RUBBING ALCOHOL
  • Rinse and dry cantaloupe seeds
  • In a disposable bowl, soak clean seeds in a solution of Rubbing Alcohol and food coloring (1:1 ratio - alcohol/food coloring)
  • Dry on paper towels
  • Let your child create a mosaic using the seeds

  • Fruit Scented Art
  • Children can paint fruit cut-outs or their own fruity still life with fruit flavored Kool-Aid mixed with some water

  • Fruit Printing
  • Spread paint thinly onto a sponge or plate
  • Print with halves of apples and oranges onto paper
