VOCABULARY

There are many opportunities during cooking to introduce vocabulary. Here are a list of words to review specific to this recipe:
  • egg
  • yolk
  • white
  • separate
  • batter
  • waffle iron
  • fold

  • foamy

MATH

  • Tic Tac Toe Waffles
  • Give children a paper waffle board
  • Count the boxes (nine)
  • Explain that children will take turns and apply their specific game pieces (coins, berries, marbles) to the board
  • Three in a row wins

  • One-To-One Correspondence
  • Have a child place one berry in each square
  • Count how many berries are on the board

SCIENCE

  • While beating the egg whites, point out to your child that the egg whites change from a clear yellow to opaque
  • Beating causes tiny air bubbles to fill into the mixture
  • Beating also causes the texture to change from runny to firm
  • You can also show this concept by having your child blow into a straw, causing frothy bubbles to build in the liquid

  • Water Play
  • Use egg beaters and liquid soap in water to form bubbles

ART

  • Waffle Printing
  • Use a cross-hatch potato masher or plastic strawberry container to print with
  • Dip into paint and apply to a piece of paper
  • Allow the paint to dry
  • Add fingerprint "blueberries" to each box by dipping your child's pinky finger into blue paint
