FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES:


VOCABULARY

There are many opportunities during cooking to introduce vocabulary. Here are a list of words to review specific to this recipe:
  • paint
  • cheese
  • mix
  • melt

MATH

  • Mouse Patterns
  • Copy or draw many colorful mice
  • Lay them out in a pattern and let the children complete the pattern by adding the correct mouse
  • red, yellow; red, yellow; red, _______
  • blue, green, red; blue, green, red; _____, green, ___
  • yellow, yellow, blue; yellow, yellow, blue; _____, _____, _____

    Sandwich Patterns
  • When preparing the sandwich, children had to follow the pattern: bread, cheese, cheese, bread
  • Continue this concept with other objects that relate to the story book read

SCIENCE

  • Mix food coloring or paint to create different colors

    Color Mixing
  • (To be prepared by an adult beforehand:
  • 1 cup corn starch
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 4 cups water
  • Mix on the stove
  • Separate into 3 bowls and let cool
  • Add red food coloring to one bowl
  • Add yellow food coloring to another bowl
  • Add blue food coloring to a third bowl
  • Add one spoonful of mixture to plastic ziplock bags in various combinations
  • Red + blue
  • Red + yellow
  • Blue + yellow
  • Red + yellow + blue
  • Seal bags
  • Let children mix the colors within the bags

LANGUAGE ARTS

  • Hold up colorful mice and tell the children they have to hide from a hungry cat
  • Have them come up with a place that the colorful mice can hide
  • EXAMPLE: The yellow mouse may hide in a bowl of lemons
  • To encourage conversation, begin by supplying hiding places for some of the colorful mice
  • Let the children match the colors then create their own stories

  • Sequencing
  • Create (by drawing) or find pictures from a book or magazine of individual pictures depicting:
  • A cow
  • Milk being churned
  • Cheese
  • Mix up the images and then have your child place them in the proper order to tell the "picture" story

  • Make a color book
  • Write the color name on each page
  • Have children cut and paste pictures from magazines on proper pages
  • Play I spy:
  • “I spy something red"
  • “I spy something blue"
  • “I spy something magenta"
  • “I spy something turquoise" etc.

ART

  • Provide primary colors.
  • Let the children experiment
  • EXAMPLE: Give the child different colored cellophane
  • Let the child collage and note as the colors overlay, they create new colors
