SAFETY TIPS
CAUTIOUS COOKIE IS HERE TO REMIND YOU OF SAFETY ISSUES.
Wherever you see his exclamation sign - next to specific steps on a recipe - this step should be completed by an adult. Remember, be a CAUTIOUS COOKIE and you and your child will have a safe and enriching experience.

"Cooking is a fun and participatory experience. It can also be dangerous. Children need to be supervised during the entire exercise."

By their nature children are curious and might want to mimic what they see you doing. It is important to discuss the consequences and repercussions of disobeying safety rules. Children are at various developmental stages. No one knows your child better than you. Review the recipes and use your judgement in what they may need your assistance in.

CLEANLINESS:
  • Work area should be clean and germ free.
  • Never let your child lick the batter.
  • Always wash hands before cooking. Explain how we don't want to add germs to our recipe.
  • Itchy nose - use your arm to scratch it; sneeze and cough -do so into your arm.
  • When the ocassional finger wanders up their nose, wash it again.

TOOL SAFETY:
  • Your children use real tools. If not used properly they can be seriously hurt. Even the simplest of tools can be dangerous, for instance, if using a plastic knife, they have serrated edges and are sharp so always supervise!

HEAT SAFETY:
  • Never let a child near ANY source of heat, this includes boiling, baking, frying, open flame or hot items.
  • Children should NEVER EVER remove or place anything near or into a stove, oven or microwave.
  • There MUST be EXTRA parent supervision with soup recipes.
  • Have the child or children do all of the steps that DOES NOT include heat.

EGG USE SAFETY:
  • Raw eggs can carry the bacteria Salmonella; wash hands after cracking eggs.
  • As much as we enjoyed it as children, advise your children never to lick batter that contains raw eggs.

MEAT SAFETY:
  • Children should NEVER handle raw meat
  • When cooking with meat, transfer with tongs.
  • If child comes in contact with meat, wash hands immediately. You don't want their germy hands making their way to their mouths.
