FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES:


VOCABULARY

There are many opportunities during cooking to introduce vocabulary. Here are a list of words to review specific to this recipe:
  • herbs
  • parsley
  • thyme
  • stem
  • leaves
  • mash
  • tender

MATH

  • Veggie Patterns
  • Setup a vegetable pattern and have the children continue it:
  • "peas, carrots; peas, carrots; peas ____"

SCIENCE

  • Fruit & Vegetable Detectives
  • Explain how in science, fruit have seeds; vegetables are parts of plants that we eat (leaves, stems, roots, etc.)

  • Celery Is A Stem
  • Stand a celery stick in red water (use red food coloring)
  • Have children predict what will happen
  • Leave out overnight
  • Observe how the leaves will turn red
  • How does this happen?

LANGUAGE ARTS

  • Have the children create words with uncooked alphabet pasta

ART

  • Soup Art
  • Provide a disposable bowl to the children
  • Cut out vegetable pictures from magazines (or create and cut your own from colored construction paper)
  • Provide uncooked alphabet pasta
  • Have the children collage a 3D bowl of alphabet soup by gluing the objects into the bowl
